2006 KLR 650
27,406 miles

Had this KLR since 2013. Love it to pieces. Been everywhere on it, highways all over the country, single track, logging roads, gravel, snow. Never let me down. Will be good for at least another 30k

I'm selling because my job has kept me a away from home too much and I haven't been able to ride much in the last year. Deserves a better home.

It's a 2006 Gen 1, that has been used how it was intended to be used. Scratches abound, but nothing serious and it has never been laid down at speed (just tipped over 4000 times in the woods.) Plastic is all intact, no cracks, and has very few scratches. The guy I bought it from has a quick terrible paint job done to plastic and it's bubbled off in places. Color looks great for the bike, just wasn't done to last super well. I never minded so I just left it.

Last year at 24,000 miles was the first time I'd seriously checked the valves and was amazed to find that they were pretty make still right at spec. No oil leak/burn. Starts right up, runs like a dream. Original sprocket ratio. I ran a higher tooth rear for a bit for better highway cruising, but it changed the character of the engine too much. Feels best stock I think. Handle bar upgrade helped a lot with high speed vibration. Very nice ride now.

Below I'll list all the upgrades I've done to it. First, here at the current small issues it has-

-dash lights (turn signal, neutral light) died a few weeks ago. Bulb or a fuse, just haven't chased it yet. It happens every few years. I never use dash light for neutral anyway, so I just left it. easy fix.
- Original heat shield on exhaust rusted to death-- so I made a replacement out of a sheet of stainless and bolted it on. So far works better than original (see photo)
- general small scratches and things from brush etc.

IMO this era KLR is the very best it gets. They had fine tuned everything in the Gen 1 era on this bike. Essentially same bike as the new Gen 2, just minus all the extra plastic and dumb stuff that will break. If I was to buy a KLR again in the future, I'd be eyeing this year again.

Currently running 70/30 road tires. Metzler Tourance front and back. Plenty of life left on both.

Upgrades:
Custom built steel crash bars front/rear that protect the bike VERY well

High strength sub frame bolts

DOOHICKEY fixed long time ago

Handle bar upgrade and very slight rise.

Steel braided brake lines and larger discs with new pads installed last year

Thermobob kit installed for better engine in cold weather starts.

Thumb screw fuel mixture adjust for on the fly adjust at altitude

Front Fairing upgrade to stronger and better angle for wind (fairing plus short windscreen creates a good pocket)

High beam flood lights, waterproof, shock proof, and wired to high beam switch

LED rear brake light (flashes rapidly when braking)

Seat Concepts seat. Huge improvement from stock.

Bark buster hand guards (plastic guard piece not pictured, but are installed now)

FMF Q4 exhaust + pipe (great tone and much lighter weight than old stock beast)

Carb rejetted 3 years ago for more power, and strangely seems to get better mpg in my experience

Extra grippy / extra strong foot pegs

Wolverine Tank Bag

Very sturdy aftermarket skid plate

New Headlight

Aftermarket front mud guard, shorter and more stout (original moves around a lot in wind at high speed)

Fork Brace - just tightens up the front end feel in corners when under load/speed.

5 stage heated hand grips. They get TOASTY

12v charging port for any USB accessories

Ram Mount for phone

VERY NICE new chain about 1500 miles ago
carb cleaned and valves checked/shimmed about 1000 miles ago. Everything looked amazing, valves were almost perfect, carb looked good.

New battery about year and a half ago

I'm not super mechanically proficient, but I know my way around this bike really well. I'll try to answer any questions you have. Test drive is fine with cash in hand and a license.

clean title, but needs new tags

firm on price. Not in a hurry to sell.

cheers
